National Museum

The National Museum in George Town is both a natural history as well as cultural history museum. This is one of more educational of the Grand Cayman tourist attractions. The natural history portion of the museum displays native birds and fauna that are found on all three islands. In addition, the cultural history portion displays a bit of the heritage of the Caymanian people.
One of the fascinating aspects of this museum, is the building itself. It was constructed with a technique that used very few tools. For example, the walls are constructed by placing large wooden posts in the ground separated by about 2 ft. Then, between the posts, smaller pieces of wood are woven together to connect the posts. Finally, a type of plaster, made from the limestone gathered from the ocean, is placed over the woven pieces and posts. The entire process seems so labor intensive, but the end result is a building that lasts a long time.
